Things are moving along at this estate sale, although I am getting tired of the dead animals! I found two more opossums and another rat today. Its just getting GROSS! Anyway we have this bitchen home built dune buggy for sale. Built before the fiberglass generation from a shortened pan of a beetle. Nice front suspension and tranny! LIVE THE DREAM $350.00

There's a good $500.00 bucks or so of VW parts here not to mention the awsomeness of the home built factor. This thing rules and should be put back in the sand!

Need a little help...

I am still working on this estate sale and have been finding some neat stuff. I am trying to figure out what this is. Does anybody want to take a guess. It seems very automotive to me but I just can't figure it out. Who used the omega symbol? It is made of cast aluminum, measures almost 6" in width, has a duel lead socket with a single filament MAZDA bulb rated 12-16 volts. It almost looks like a license plate light but I think that it was used on the interior because of the finish. Can anybody I.D. this thing and put me out of my misery!

BOMB THREAT

O.K. so were are still working hard to sort this crazy garage at our latest estate sale. Early in the afternoon I pulled a box down from a high shelf and start to go through it. The next thing I know I have a real WWII hand grenade in my hands. I have seen enough of these things to know the novelty variety and this was not one of them. I carefully put it down and stand back....pin in...military markings...NO signs of it being tampered with...SHIT! What do I do?! My wife splits and leaves me to die. I call the O.C. Sheriff. They come out and take a look from five feet away and the dude says, "it looks like a grenade to me. I'm calling the bomb squad". SHIT! The bomb squad shows up and goes in. 10 minutes later he walks out with it in pieces. The grenade had been disarmed years ago but there was no clear indication that it had. He told me that upon first inspection he was concerned. He told me that, "through a series of "tests" he felt fairly certain that it was safe" and then picked it up and really checked it out. STUD! The guy was cool as hell and has a job that nobody wants.

I brought an old friend back to life this week. I had to sort out a few problems that had forced me to park it and a few problems that arose from it sitting for the last 4 or so years. Its all good now and nothing but fun!
I traded a guy a coffee pot for it in the early 90's and found the motor in pieces in the dumpster behind my house.

I've been in hiding for awhile. Not for any other reason other than sometimes life just gets in the way. I have seen and done a lot, bought and sold a lot, worried, cried, laughed and lay sleepless all night these past months. Major change is upon me and I don't like change but in the end it has worked out wonderfully. I still have a lot of things to do but my head is right and hopefully I will find the time to keep this blog updated. For now enjoy a few crappy cell phone pictures I've taken recently.

I wanted this electric shopper so bad but somebody had deeper pockets than me.

I found this great light house at an estate sale last week and was lucky enough to meet the daughter of the man that made it. He was a WWII vet with 30 plus years in the Navy. He was a Master Machinist Mate and he had hand built this out of aluminum. The detail is amazing. It is motorized and the light actually spins and lights up. I would love to go on and on about the detail and about how truly cool this thing is but you really have to see it in person to get it. Pictures just don't do it justice

The funny thing about swap meet finds is that normally there is no history with the item. As is usually the case I have no idea where these have been or what they went through over the last 40 years. What I do know is that I found them and brought them here to my warehouse which is exactly 3 minutes from where these leathers were made.

I found these steel boobs in a shitty old falling down ex body shop. I think that they were a bra form store display from way back. I found the cast iron base at another sale. I found a piece of 3/8" round stock just rusty enough to match the rest in the garage with the opossums pictured below. Put all three pieces together, wax and presto!!! Pure class!!!

I've seen a lot of crazy things in houses and garages while attending estate sales. I was not prepared for this though.

A mother opossum thought that she had found the perfect spot for family. Mother and babies were nestled together in a cardboard box on a shelf in the garage at a sale I was at on Tuesday. This was by far the messiest garage I had been in, in a long time. Good thing she wasn't in a wood box, I would've had to kick her ass out!

Iron Gates For Sale

These are really a nice set of iron gates. They are definitely pre war and probably date to the 1920's. All hand wrought and heavy as f*#@. They measure about 56 1/2" tall and about 34" wide.

Some of you may not understand my attraction to things like this. Let me explain it like this. These gates were made entirely by a black smiths hands at a time when men actually worked for a living. That man had hands like catchers mitts and calluses as thick as pink pet erasers. He created functional works of art that will outlast us all and I like that.

I went down to San Diego's Big 3 swap meet last Friday and what did I find? This...

I have a habit of doing things wrong. Most were buying vintage speed equipment and other things rare and valuable. Hell, I had a friend that was pushing a cart with vintage tool boxes stacked to GOD. While these people were buying the things that I should have been, I set my sights on this pretty lady. I don't know, she just spoke to me. She wanted me to save her. I like her. She reminds me of a 1940's Catalina Swimwear ad.

Rings For Sale

The first is this great Mexican nickle silver skull ring. This thing is COOL. Red jeweled eyes and the number 13 across his forehead. This dates from the late 1940's or early 1950's. The ring is about a size 8-8 1/2.

Secondly, I have this great sterling silver Indian head ring. This is a cast piece that dates to the 1950's. It's about a size 10.

at the weekend all I can say, is that I'm glad it's over. Four long days of packing, loading, unloading, unpacking, up and down three flights of stairs, and plenty of blood, sweat and tears can take a toll on a mans soul. I am happy to have seen old friends, made new ones, and for Scott who always seemed to show up with a beer when I really needed it. His generosity is constant and always appreciated.

Busy Weekend

Against my better judgement, I have signed on to be a part of Rin Tanaka's INSPIRATION show this weekend on the Queen Mary here in Long Beach. The load in and load out are gonna kick my butt but I'm sure the in between will be a blast. I will be taking a brand new load of vintage rust and canvas sure to please the crowd. This great Triumph neon clock will be for sale and should lead you right into my booth. Stop on by and say, "hey" if you are so inclined. I have also just gotten word that my old pal Sara Ray will be in attendance.

I will also be at the Rose Bowl Flea Market on Sunday if I am at all able to drag myself out of bed.

I had a couple of WTF moments yesterday and I decided to share. First of all I purchased this great fiberglass snowman earlier in the week at a sale. He stands about 5 foot tall and has a great look. It's been in the back of my truck for a couple of days.

I went to pull it out yesterday and spotted something strange in the crack on the bottom.

WTF! There are nude women molded into the inside bottom of my snowman!

Secondly, a friend and I were walking a local junk meet and he walks up and with this motorcycle hat that he had just found. "Let me see that", I say....

Today sucked. I was up at 4:00 am and standing in front of a house at 10 to five waiting for an estate sale that was to start at 8:00 am. It was cold and there was a ton of people there. I had seen pictures online of the things available at the sale and it looked good. Long story short, I got nothing. People whom I had just shared a meal with a few days earlier cut in line in front of me, I got in a fight with a cunty old woman and nearly got tossed from the sale. Not good....I lost out on this one. I was standing outside talking with a friend when he shows me what he had found at the sale. It was this super cool little souvenir pennant from the Isle of Mann TT races in 1960. It has a little clamp to attach it to your handlebars. Too cool. He sold it to me.

I went to an Estate sale a few months back at a house that, I cam to find out, was the residence of the owner and president of COX. I found some really great things including these gems pictured. The dune buggy art was the original illustration used for the box cover of the radio controlled version of the buggy. The gold chopper trike was the prototype for the version that was made in the early 70's. Too cool!

The big rooster is pretty common. The muffler man is iconic but I don't know anyone personally that owns one. I tried to buy one years ago here in Long Beach. He stood beside a giant hardware store called Dooleys and when they closed he was for sale. I didn't have an extra 10 grand so I had to pass. The Statue of Liberty is something that I haven't seen before and the vintage outboard motors lining the fence was a nice touch.

But that airplane on the roof took me over the top. What a sight! I wish, I wish, I wish........................

Treasure Chest

Sometimes I find things that make me smile. Sometimes I find things that make me money. Sometimes making money makes me smile. Sometimes I find things that I couldn't bear to put up on the auction block. This is one of those things. I mean who in their right mind would sell a treasure chest?!

This chest was made with an old military foot locker. It is all hand painted and appears to be really old. It's hard to see in the picture but the lettering on the front was once covered with a reflective grit.

It looks like the mouth was cut to allow tickets to be pulled through or put in. This makes me believe that this chest was used at a carnival or fair. Who nows?

This past weekend was my birthday and a perfect opportunity to head to the mountains and do a little poking around. I have driven past this little pick up a bunch of times and have always wondered about it. I finally stopped to take a few pictures. It's a Powell. Very cool truck with a neat history. Grudge Build

So as I was standing taking pictures of the above pictured Powell, I heard a voice mumble something and someone coming through the trees behind me. This is not a new experience for me as I am often standing some where I shouldn't be taking pictures of someone else's stuff. I turned with a smile and met a man face to face. He was slurring drunk and turned out to be a nice guy. He gave me the story of the Powell and I found out then that it belonged to his friend. He then wanted me to check out his 4X4 Capri, which by coincidence was where I was headed next.

The man insisted that I took a look at the interior. Very nice! He went on to explain that the reason for this build was that he had a Code Enforcement lady up his butt about his collection of derelict vehicles in his front yard. He was told that all off his vehicles must be mobil. So what do you do when you have a rusted out hulk of a K5 Blazer and a dead Capri? The answer is obvious!

By pure coincidence I was treated to 2 different versions of the all mighty Mongoose yesterday. Fist off, I bought this at a local yard sale. It's crazy how original it is. It has it's original tires, grips, seat, everything. It even has all of it's original reflectors, which is weird because that was the first thing you ditched when you got home from the bike shop.
Later in the day I ended up at my parents house digging through the garage looking for some old camping gear of mine. My Mongoose is still there hanging in the rafters until my boy is big enough for it. It was nice to see it again. I loved that bike and rode the shit out of it. Really brought back memories of the neighborhood track and treks out of the neighborhood with my older
friend to tracks in other neighborhoods. I can still remember every jump and berm at Ascot and all the skin I left there.

I've been digging through a box of my old stuff that I found buried in the garage. There were a bunch of old punk rock fliers in it. This is my all time favorite flyer....always has been. You youngsters aren't going to understand how really insane this show would have been. This was the 80's and their just wasn't the kind of crossover between music that there is now. Punk and Hip Hop did not mix. This would have either been a blood bath or some kind of weird scene were people just didn't know what to do or think of one another. The bloods and the crips may have just come together for one night only to wage war againt the punks. Who knows???? This show never happened as, if I remember right, RUN DMC cancelled their entire tour because of gang violence between the bloods and crips at the shows. Colors....colors....

I dug this incredibly cool old box out of the dumpster behind my house a couple of months ago. I couldn't believe that someone would throw it away. I happened to see my neighbor in the alley a few days after and asked him if he had thrown it away. Not only did he throw it away he gave me the history of it and told me that the lid was in the dumpster also. Well, I got a pair of gloves and a long handled shovel and dug down to the bottom and found the lid. RAD!

My neighbors uncle had made this box in the 1920's when he was about 12 years old. He made it out of old fruit crates. I just can't believe that he threw it away!
